GARLIC CONDIMENTS [May. 14th, 2009|08:55 pm]
i'm sad--I can't find garlic mayonnaise anywhere anymore :( maybe they stopped making it.....
at least i have garlic ketchup.
and I don't think i've seen garlic mustard, but the Polish brand that makes garlic mustard (and which is available in the states) is available here, but so far only been able to find horseradish mustard, which is amazing as well!
also, of course, I have garlic powder. I think it should be one of the three main seasonings available on every table like salt and pepper. I am gonna start keeping mine on the table along with those two.
mmmm, garlic...................................................

Kam'yanka-Buz'ka [May. 4th, 2009|09:04 pm]
Sunday went to Kam'yanka-Buz'ka to see the church were my great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather was the priest from 1744-1777. the church was built in 1667. absolutely amazing church with a very old cemetery. we couldn't find the grave of my relative-several of the graves near the church that would have likely been the priests' were so old and worn and broken that we couldn't read or find any inscriptions on them. however, supposedly inside the church there are inscriptions about my relative and his son, both of whom were were priests. unfortunately the church was locked.

<3Lviv<3 [Apr. 29th, 2009|09:31 am]
reunited with my long lost love only to find it with a new crack and an unwillingness to be tuned properly.
i've spent many hours the last few days trying to tune my tsymbaly but have broken about 10 strings and almost all of the bass notes have problems with buzzing and it sounds horrible.  i really hope i will be able to tune it enough where i can actually play songs and not make people cringe. will need to put in another many hours to see what i can do.

so happy to be back in Lviv. went to Karpaty this weekend and last few days have been hanging out in Lviv and catching up with family and friends.

work starts next week.
then natalya comes the following week
and then we go to Poland for a week!

when i grow up i want to be.... [Mar. 23rd, 2009|02:11 pm]
[music |Madeline]

In first grade, 1991, in school I wrote a letter to myself that I was not supposed to open until the year 2006. I found it a couple of days ago, not much was written, but for the answer to who I wanted to be I wrote "artest, teacher, bilder." I think by "bilder" I mean architect.  Anyhow, 18 years later, I still wonder and dream about what I will become. Maybe I should write another letter to myself that I will open in 2021 and see if I can attain those deams in the next 15 years, since my first attempt failed.

Colorado, aka my weekend with the button thieves, and Wisconsin [Feb. 26th, 2009|02:37 pm]
I had an awesome visit to Colorado. Colorado is so amazing because of all the mountains near the major cities. Boulder is great because its small, reminded me of Madison, but in the background you see these awesome beautiful mountains, that are close enough to bike to. Boulder is also a great city for biking.

I flew in Thursday and went to Fort Collins to my sister's.

Friday we drove through the mountains to Boulder, stopping at Caribou, a former mining town/current ghost town. We saw some ruins, but couldn't find the gravestones that were supposed to be nearby. Once in Boulder, I met up with Eric we went to a pub with a wide selection of stouts, and I tried a cream tangerine stout. Eventually Julie came and we ate a huge plate of nachos. Then Andrew arrived.

Saturday, we went grocery shopping and got out picture taken by the honest tea lady, then rode our bikes to see the prairie dogs. on the way, however, we stopped at a meadery and had a free mead tasting, 11 different and yummy meads! then we bought a bottle of mead and mead chocolates and went to picnic with the prairie dogs. After a tour of downtown boulder we went back to eric and julie's place to start cooking for the potluck. we made red bean lasagna and banana split cupcakes. yuuuum. lots of people came to the potluck and we ate and looked at travel photos. when everyone left the four of us finished the mead from the meadery, then sampled some of eric and julie's homemade mead. mmm, i really liked the rhubarb one.

Sunday, we rode our bikes to the foot of the mountains and then started on a hike to see the Royal Arch. It was a nice hike, and a great view where we could see all over Boulder, and even Denver in the distance. After our hike we went to the Tajiki tea house where i drank very yummy chai and ate a persian kofteh dish. then andrew left and we went back to e & j's apartment and hung out til my sister picked me up.

Monday, from Fort Collins me and my sister drove to Grey Rock trails and went on a nice long hike.

Tuesday, flew back to Chicago in the morning, and after stopping at home drove up to Madison to a Mardi Gras party with Rebecca, Charitie, and Maria. we ate dinner and king cake, then took shots of many different kinds of uki vodka :)

Wednesday, went to Dobra Tea house and then an Indian buffet, and then I headed home. After stopping at home I headed down to the city to see Nana Grizol at an art studio/gallery place in an old factory. Brian Dewan opened up and he played accordion for some songs AND for other played what looked to be some sort of electric zither... oh i just looked it up and was right! (he most often accompanies his singing with an electric zither of his own invention, outfitted with eight humbucker pickups and 88 strings). i was super excited. Then Nana Grizol played, then we watched a filmstrip about Civic Pride. Then the Music Tapes played, yay banjos! My favorite part was when he played music on his singing saw. so very Delicatessiny:) and then we all played a game where we wrote down memories, set them on fire outside, and jumped over the flame. then there was something we did with bells, but i didn't quite catch the explanation. in any case, it was interesting. oh, and one of the members of the Music Tapes is 7 foot tall metronome that actually works!

And that concluded an awesome week of traveling, hiking, eating, cooking, tea houses, visiting friends and my sister.

Paranoia in America [Jan. 30th, 2009|03:21 pm]

Now that i am a "master" in eastern european studies, i figured i should develop a better understanding of my country, so have been reading a lot of literature on the dark side of american history, expanisionsim, imperialism, politics, capitalism, chicago school ecomonics, etc.

However, I do feel a sort of relief in American politics with Obama in office; even though he may not have the ability or support to make drastic changes, he has already in his short time in office been taking steps in a positive direction.

Anyhow, I remembered a song I have always really loved by the Au Pairs:

The Au Pairs - America
(1982)
Get into the mood for worldwide confrontation
Wise up to the words of Haig delivered through Reagan
Exposing a commie campaign for world domination
Let's have some more mass extermination
Genocide down at the Sumpul river
Children of eight can go and get raped
Why don't you get a bayonet -
mince up a peasant or two?
Remember remember America's right behind you!

At all costs we've got to stop the Reds
Who wants to hear about 1000 peasants lying dead

Remember the 50s and Mr. MacCarthy
Let's have a witch hunt and nuclear party
Reagan on TV - what a nice kind of guy
He appears on the news without collar and tie
He could press the button and he would survive
He could rule the world cos he's got God on his side

Paranoia in America

==========

So the holidays are mostly over, american xmas, new years, uki xmas, and uki new years, and now i must devote my time to figuring out what i am doing the next couple of months....

On new years eve in chicago we saw a fox on the cemetery fence and stared at it for a while.

Overall, 2008 was a good year, finished my masters, had an amazing time in lviv, then lived in dc interning.

Now is probably the first time in my life i have nothing concrete planned for the future, just some ideas and goals and dreams, hopefully i can start realizing these in 2009.

Some of my resolutions for 2009 are to practice a lot of tsymbaly, practice a lot of ukrainian (and english) vocab, get in better shape, spend more time reading and less on the internet.

old videos [Dec. 29th, 2008|08:40 pm]
Today I have been transferring our old home videos from Beta to DVD.  I have been watching parts of it, and I watched myself turn 2 and 3 years old.  So cute.  Also, I knew more Ukrainian at age 2 than I do now.  One video showed my aunt asking me to point to different body parts as she said them in Ukrainian and I knew elbow in Ukrainian then, and I don't now!  Okay, so in reality I probably have a better vocabulary now, but I did know words then that I dont today :)

Also, this is already general knowledge, but the 80s were a great time for fashion and hair... I think it multiplies in greatness when you see your parents and your friends' parents dressed in 80s clothes, with big hair, and huge glasses.  Priceless.

I'm also transferring a couple of old movies we had recorded from TV onto Beta: Canterville Ghost and Boogedy Bride, both classic 80s movies that me and my sibs grew up on.  And luckily we didn't fastforward the commercials because those are almost better than the movies themselves.

Next project will be to transfer VHS to DVD like the documentary I made in high school about New Trier's independent music scene (we actually had Joe Trohman(of Fall Out Boy) and his band lined up to interview but they backed out at last minute... that doc would have been worth millions if we had gotten that interview;)) and my debutante video, and the Jump Up! ska concert video I have.... I can't wait.

winter wonderland [Dec. 29th, 2008|08:31 pm]
[music |Dakha Brakha]

So the weekend before last I went to Sandwich, New Hampshire with my sister to visit some of her friends. It is a really cute village, and we came during a snow storm, so there was tons of fresh snow await for us to play in. We went skitching and cross-country skiing.

These pictures are from our cross-country skiing adventure. We skiied to a frozen over waterfall and made our way under the water fall, aka to the ice cave. So beautiful.
